The Rise and Popularity of Protein Powder.

The title says it all. Protein powder has certainly become on the rise. I suppose it may even be a trend? But the main question I wanna know is - why are there so many people buying it nowadays? It isn't an essential supplement at all, but more and more companies are manufacturing their own protein powders and let's face it, y'all are going nuts about this stuff.

Should it be something you should incorporate into your diet? Mind the pun, but let’s break it all down.

Personally, I do use a protein powder regularly. In saying that, I've also been using it for years (ya know, before it became "on trend.") Why? I do a lot of strength and resistance training during the week, so for me, it's important to replenish my body with a protein source post-exercise. Numerous studies (I can give you references if you really want for all you nerds out there) have shown that consuming between 20-40g of protein after a workout can maximise the ability for the body to recover effectively after exercise, as well as promoting muscle growth and repair.

For someone who is extremely busy 90% of the time, using a protein powder to help increase my protein intake is very beneficial. But please, don't rely on it as your main source of protein. Most protein powders only give you between 20-30g of protein per serve. It is so important to ingest protein from other sources, such as meat, poultry, fish, legumes, nuts and milk products. These types of foods will not only give you an abundant serve of protein, but will also provide you with healthy fats, vitamins and minerals which you won’t be getting from your protein powder.

Bottom line is… You don’t need protein powder. If you’re not putting your body through strenuous exercise, or you’re not looking to gain muscle and build those glutes, then you’re better off without. Don’t buy a big bag and use it just to make pretty looking smoothie bowls. Absolutely, use it for your breakfast, and use it to make some protein snacks for the week. But getting the majority of your protein from other sources such as meats, fish and legumes is extremely important and WAY better for you.
